- Jerry Saltz' Village Voice roundup of the "new art season."
- Look at slides, practice building descriptive sentences as a group.
- Read Ellen Gallagher reviews. Talk about what works and what doesn't.
- Go over rules for reviews.
- Describe the work, at least three pieces, in concrete terms.
- Reviews are 400-500 words. Explain how to do word count on computer.
- Realize that it is not possible to express more than one or two ideas in 500 words. Do have at least one idea.
- Put the show you're reviewing in some context your own, or what you know of the art world.
- Give a sense of whether you like or don't like the work in the first paragraph.
- Name of exhibition goes in quotes; names of artworks go in italics along with dates of artworks.
- Good lead, good kicker; snappy beginning and ending.
- Try reading your review to yourself in the mirror, or at least out loud. Continue working on the review until you can do this without cringing, confusing yourself or laughing.
- Do not give up. If you get stuck, walk away and come back later. Even five minutes can help a lot. Consider also: a first draft is not as polished as it will become.
- If you do break a rule, have a reason.
