Mariya Reviews The Georgian Ballet by New York City Ballet

The Georgian Ballet is amazing. It manages to be traditional, educational and exciting all at the same time. The ballet is composed of several small dances that demonstrate Georgian culture. Cultural values such as chivalry, independence, and love are represented in the dancers' graceful movements. In addition, each dance focuses on a group of people, such as the warriors, the nobility, the shepherds, and even the amazons. Important aspects of the culture, such as gender relations, and class differences are uniquely incorporated into the choreography and you can't help but leave the theatre knowing a little bit more about Georgia than you did before.

If the unique choreography does not blow you away, the costumes and the extremely talented dancers will. The costumes are beautiful and change about fifteen times throughout the ballet, giving the audience a sense of how rich Georgian culture is. In addition, the dancers perform gravity defying leaps and demonstrate such a high level of skill that they usually receive a standing ovation at the end of the show.

For those who are scared of falling asleep during the ballet, there is nothing to fear. Surprisingly, the ballet has a lot of action. First of all, the music is very fast-paced and cheerful. Secondly, there are two dances which actually involve fighting with swords. The fighting is beautifully choreographed and even the clashing of the swords adds to the music. It's a really interesting sight. Finally, the dancers are so talented that while you're sitting there in awe wondering how they manage to do that, the ballet will be over.

I would strongly recommend that everyone try to see this ballet. Everything about it is fascinating. The choreography is so unique and beautiful that it even manages to make the marching of soldiers a stunning work of art, and the dancers feats deserve to be in the Guiness World Book of Records. You will leave the theatre more than satisfied that you got your money's worth.
