Passing Strange, I can honestly say is an inspiring musical that catches your attention and keeps it. This play had me feeling like I was apart of it, from the high energy to the kickass music - everything was just well done and I'd be lying if I said that it wasn't a great musical. The play stars a narrator who is a musician reflecting back on his youthful years and his regretful actions. As a youth all he ever wanted was to fulfill his dream of becoming a musician but he was stuck in a community of people that he had to pass everyday that viewed him as a stranger because he wasn't trying to be like them, because he wasn't trying to impress them, because he wanted his own voice and not theirs, which I think the title is probably taken from. His mother on the other hand wanted to impress the community and she wanted to hide that part of herself that she thought they might judge and she wanted her son to do the same as well but that's not what he wanted. Lost and confused while trying to reach his dream he leaves his community, his home, what he's known all his life to go into two different worlds, Berlin and Amsterdam, that he knew nothing about. While chasing his dream he found love and acceptance but while he was trying to find himself he lost who he really was. Along the way he hurt the people that loved him like the girl in Berlin and his mother. Here was this young boy that his community didn't believe would become a musician and whose mother just didn't really give him the encouragement he needed to push for it who really started to lose sight of who he was. His mother, though you could see still loved him and wanted him to come back to her, but even she was starting to see that he wasn't the same anymore. Just the fact that he stopped calling her made her know that he was starting to forget where he came from and who he came from. His mother died without him being by her side and while he was reflecting back on his youth you could tell that he regretted the way he went about with his life and that if he could change everything he had done he would have. This musical was HILARIOUS, FUN,RELATABLE AND REALLY ENJOYABLE. FROM THE COLORFUL SETTING TO THE INTERACTION WITH THE AUDIENCE - I DON'T THINK THAT I COULD HAVE FELT ANY CLOSER TO THIS PLAY. IT WAS THE COOLEST, MOST DOWN TO EARTH MUSICAL THAT I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. |
