Queen Golder Queen Reviews The National Comedy Theatre 
Funny does not even begin to describe the hilarity of the National Comedy Theatre. If you are tired of seeing comedy shows littered with cliches than you must see this show. Not only is it original and innovative but it also provides a forum where the audience can share their life experiences and make fun of themselves. It helps people to escape daily boredom and find comic relief in experiences that can happen to all of us. The National Comedy Theatre is an improvisational show that is set up as a game show. There are two groups that consist of three players. The teams are identified by their team colors, red and blue. The two teams are entitled the Brooklyn Queens, the blue team, and the Staten Island Fairies, the red team. As the show proceeds, the teams each get a chance to pick a certain game they are interested in playing to earn points for their individual teams. Some games include forward reverse, where the players act out a scene based on audience suggestion and the referee of the game would stop the scene during the random parts and the players would have to reenact the whole scene backwards until the referee tells them to go forward. It is like rewinding and fast-forwarding a movie. Another game was called Day in the Life. During this game one audience member tells a story and the player's act it out using three different genres also suggested by the audience. The teams only get points if they succeed in getting the audience to laugh. There are penalties that can reduce the number of points the team can acquire. These are penalties include the brown bag, where if a player says or does something offensive than the referee places a bag brown on his or her head. There is also the groaner fowl where if the audience groans due to the offensive or idiocy of the joke the player has to apologize and the team loses one point. In the end the team with the most points is announced the winner This show amazed me with its ingenuity and originality. There are many improvisational shows but few approach this idea with the same creativity as this show. The mere idea of having a game show is brilliant, this way it is not only an improvisational show but also it can be a perceived as a play or a television show. It provides many sources of amusement. The other fantastic aspect of the show is the fact that it is completely different every time you go to see it. You never know what to expect and this unpredictability provides the excitement and comic relief that is missing from many comedy shows today. It is also every interactive and audience dependent. If the audience does not exhibit some sort of comical character than the show it self will also lose its hilarity. This show depends entirely on the attitude and personality of the audience. Although the show is unpredictable in the experience the audience gets, this unpredictability makes the show so great. The fact that you can go into a show, having seen it once already, and still not know if it will be good or bad provides incredible excitement and makes the whole show going experience more interesting. Although I cannot guarantee that you can definitely enjoy the show, but the originality and creativity that lies beneath the shows concept will amaze you. |
