Nina Thurau Nina Reviews Apollo Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater ![]() Going to the world-famous Apollo for Amateur Night the first time was fun, and the second time around it was still fun -- but only once they finally got the show started. The show opens with the host loudly welcoming the crowd, and singing "LetÕs Get It On." Then the audience learned about the history of the Apollo, and the host sang more songs. The Apollo is a stickler for routines, and it makes the idea of going back again, unwelcome. Finally, when the crowd was getting restless, five audience members were invited up on stage for a dancing contest, and soon after the winner was picked. Then, when it felt like the real show would never start, it did. This night it was a competition between high schools, but that didnÕt stop the crowd from voicing their opinions. The audience was told to show all the contestants love, until they showed them different. And the audience took it to heart. It was a brutal competition with dance routines, step teams and a handful of singers. The Executioner was just as riled up as the audience was, with some of the untalented contestants. He showed them no pity, as he danced or ran his way across the stage, shaking a finger at them. His costumes were hilarious too, one time he even came out dressed as a woman, drawing laughter (and weird looks) from the crowd. Going back a second time, and sitting through the long introduction, made me regret going back, but once the real show got started, some real talent was discovered, and made up for that regret. It was just as heart-pounding as the first time, but truthfully, the real entertainment for Amateur Night depends on the contestants and the enthusiasm of the crowd. |
