Kevin Gomez Kevin Reviews Skin Tight by Nicu's Spoon ![]() I find myself in a subterranean black box sitting in a chair cloaked in crimson light...waiting. I am waiting to witness the last few precious moments of a middle-aged woman's life. She is not alone in the darkness, but with her husband and soul mate of the past 30 years. They recall all their firsts in their relationship, explore their fears, tell their secrets and enlighten us to the imminent tragedy of their story. The Looking Glass Theatre is located in the basement of an old church displaying plays of a provocative and sexy nature. The theatre itself doesn't have much visually to offer its audience. The scenery is virtually non-existent and stage props are hardly used. This places a huge emphasis on the actors and the playwright to elaborate on their surroundings in great enough detail for the audience to see what they see. Founded in 2001, Nicu's Spoon is dedicated to producing socially relevant theatrical works that present new ideas, challenge definitions and touch the heart in an unexpected ways. In Skin Tight, the company feeds us with a dramatic performance with two excellent actors in Stephanie Barton-Farcas and James Jacobus, and touch upon the universal themes of the love, family unity, sexual desire and, ultimately, mortality. They are amazingly comfortable with the bare stage, their bodies and each other. |
