Tiffany Reviews Cookin' at the Minetta Lane Theatre

Nong-ak is a traditional Korean music formed to help encourage unity among the people. Hour-glass shaped drums, barrel drums, small gongs, and large gongs where the common instruments used to create Nong-ak. The music created by the instruments where named Samulnori. Cookinâ uses the traditional rhythms of Samulnori to a fast-paced kitchen show combining comedy, rhythm, and non-verbal performance. The instruments used to create Samulnori are replaced with kitchen utensils such as knives, cutting boards, pots, pans, chopsticks, and woks.

Before the show begins, a few words are said through a screen. It explains a little bit of what the show is about and what they will be doing. The day I went to the show happened to be the Managerâs (played by Young Gul Yoon) birthday. The screen had instructed us to sing him "Happy Birthday" and then welcome the performers with applause. They also teach you how to say hello in Korean.

When the show begins smoke comes out from the stage as you see the four performers starting off their show. They start of banging on drums very peacefully and start getting to a more up beat type of tune. The performers are Hyeong Han Park (nephew), Ji Wook Yang (sexy food dude), Young Gul Yoon (manager), So Min Lee (Hot Suace), and Sung Min Lee (Master Chef). These five performers go trough a series of funny events in the kitchen. One of them being the managerâs nephew being the new cook. As the three main chefs worry about if he could cook they have to try to make a Korean cake for a wedding with or without his help. The nephew causes a lot of trouble by making the wrong music or not cleaning up, but soon learns what it means to cook.

During the show there is some audience participation. For example one of them was for two people form the audience to pretend to be the two getting married. This was hilarious because they gave them funny little outfits and at the end of the show (when the wedding party took place) they showed their picture together on screen (that was taken during the show). As being a part of the wedding they got Pocky (a Korean treat). The second event was a dumpling challenge where they took four people from the audience and teamed them up into twos. Red team and Blue team. Each team had to try to make the most dumplings before time ran out. My mom happened to take part in this challenge, and although she lost she got a prize of Hot & Spicy Noodle Soup.

This show is good for anyone and will guarantee to make anybody laugh. At then end of the show you are allowed to get a picture and or autographs from each of the performers. There is also a small gift shop if you would like to buy a souvenir.

So remember to bring a camera and something for them to sign in and get ready to start COOKIN.
