Class One, Thursday, October 14, 4:30pm

  1. Introductions.
  2. Cultural top ten.
  3. Maurizio Catalan/Peter Halley interview from Index.
  4. Discussion of how to take notes in galleries.

Homework: In preparation for first outing, read introduction to David Wojnarowicz, In the Shadow of the American Dream: The Diaries of David Wojnarowicz. Get a notebook and pen to bring to all classes and all outings.

  1. Compare notes.
  2. Jerry Saltz' Village Voice roundup of the "new art season."
  3. Look at slides, practice building descriptive sentences as a group.
  4. Read Ellen Gallagher reviews. Talk about what works and what doesn't.
  5. Go over rules for reviews.
  6. Describe the work, at least three pieces, in concrete terms.
  7. Reviews are 400-500 words. Explain how to do word count on computer.
  8. Realize that it is not possible to express more than one or two ideas in 500 words. Do have at least one idea.
  9. Put the show you're reviewing in some context your own, or what you know of the art world.
  10. Give a sense of whether you like or don't like the work in the first paragraph.
  11. Name of exhibition goes in quotes; names of artworks go in italics along with dates of artworks.
  12. Good lead, good kicker; snappy beginning and ending.
  13. Try reading your review to yourself in the mirror, or at least out loud. Continue working on the review until you can do this without cringing, confusing yourself or laughing.
  14. Do not give up. If you get stuck, walk away and come back later. Even five minutes can help a lot. Consider also: a first draft is not as polished as it will become.
  15. If you do break a rule, have a reason.

  2. Look at various art publications, consider how they sustain themselves economically and communicate personality.
