Ever heard of a type of dance called Capoeira? If you haven't, it's an Afro-Brazilian dance that incorporates martial arts moves for performance. There isn't anyone doing martial arts in Capoeira, but you will see quick movements like flips and kicks that are similar to the moves used in martial arts.

DanceBrazil's performance at NYU's Skirball Center for the Performing Arts was lively, engaging and refreshing. Musicians that were close to the stage performed live. It was fluid and fit the free movement of the dancers. The moves were professionally put together and it showed in the performance. First there were a few numbers where the dancers challenge one another in the first part of the show. In the second part the audience is taught about the amazing power of "Inura" that was given to humans a long time ago. Following this story were small sub stories that showed how people use this power and explains that everyone has it within them.

Points that were especially rewarding were watching the competitions in the first part of the show. There were male dancers that would play parts as competitors who would show off to one another their best moves. One dancer would stand apart from the rest and dance while the rest would watch with interest. These moves included kicks in the air while another dancer was used as an aide, handstands and multiple flips that were performed consecutively. Whenever the audience was impressed with what they saw you would hear clapping.

The second act had a dreamlike effect. There were a few more moments of slow movement and the tone was calmer. The overall performance had an organized flow to it and it was obvious that this was a professional production. There wasn't a single boring moment.
