Mariya Rozenblit Mariya Reviews The Light in the Piazza at Lincoln Center Theater ![]() The story of a young American woman who falls in love while visiting Italy with her mother, The Light in the Piazza is a musical set in Europe. Tthe first act is hilarious, as the two lovers try to overcome a language barrier as well as the young woman's over-protective mother. The musical makes fun of everything ranging from stereotypes of Americans and Europeans, to mother-daughter relationships, love, art and even the musical itself. The singing and acting is very good. The woman playing the mother does an especially good job of providing comic relief in her narrative asides. The male lead also has two solos that he sings beautifully (one in Italian and one in English) and they're rather catchy. In addition, the scenery in the musical is beautiful. It constantly changes and the transitions are so smooth that it actually feels like you're traveling through Europe. Also, even though the plot is slightly predictable, it remains compelling and keeps the show moving. The singing blends very well into the story, and there's rarely a moment of boredom during the whole show. The only problem is that, while Light in the Piazza bills itself as a musical, it's more like a small opera. Do not except dancing or extravagant glittery costumes. Also, even though act one is funny, act two turns very dramatic and somber. So, don't expect a lively comedy either. Instead, you should anticipate a good drama with lots of singing and short narrative asides in between -- not to mention a great time! |
