Ida Reviews House of Desires at the Storm Theatre

The play takes place in the house of Don Pedro and Doña Ana, siblings. Don Juan wants Doña Ana who wants Don Carlos who attempted to run away and marry Doña Leonor who also happens to be the woman Don Pedro wants. Also, Don CarlosÕs sidekick, Castaño and Doña AnaÕs maid, Cecil, have an interest in one another as well. Confusing? Of course, but it all makes sense within the first 30 minutes. With that said, House of Desires really does describe the occurrences in the play. However, this play is deserving of a much better title. The title did not lure me into seeing this play. While I did not expect much from it, I was proved wrong as the great acting, fantastic stage directions and beautiful storyline all tied together in the end to deliver a very enjoyable night.

There was not a scene in this play that I slept through. Two hours may seem long, but it goes by quick when every scene has its significance to the play. The actors were beautiful and talented, especially Josh Vasquez and Amanda Cronk who kept the audience entertained with their comical characters. Every actor stayed in their character from start to finish, even when the spotlight was not on them. Facial expressions conveyed the different emotions that were inside those characters and their motives were shown quite clearly. I loved the close parameters the actors were in with the audience as Jamil Mena jumped up onto the seat next to me during a sword fight.

House of Desires opens with different snapshots of what eventually occurs in the end, which is confusing at first but all fits together as the play concludes. Peter Dobbins did a wonderful job at showing the talent that he has through such a great play. I look forward to his next production and would strongly recommend everyone to see this play.
