Alexandra Reviews Pascal Rioult Dance Theater

There are many forms of dance in the arts. Many have been around for centuries, and others are more "recent." Past centuries expressed emotion through the rigid grace of ballerinas in such entertainment as Swan Lake and other ballets. More recently, however, "modern" dance has begun to evolve.

Pascal Rioult Dance Theater, which played at the Joyce Theater in June, blends the modern forms of dance with catchy jazz ensembles and robotic themes. Their 2005 New York Season is spectacular. The show contains three very distinct pieces of dance. Although all the pieces are "non-traditional," this does not indicate that these pieces are in anyway similar. The dancers flow with grace, show forth the dire emotions they have, and groove to the beats.

If this is the first dance show you see, be careful, its modern movements may be too foreign for beginners -- or this may just be exactly what makes you tick. For anyone interested in dance this is exactly why High Five is the best. You are given the opportunity to see the true heart of New York City, and all its struggling artists, for just five dollars.
