Alexandra Reviews The Georgian Ballet by The New York City Ballet

This year's presentation by the New York State Theater of classical Russian ballets included a single performance of the Georgian Ballet Company. The performance included an array of traditional Georgian dances, ranging from those that would be performed by aristocrats to those performed in small villages. The passion and excitement of the dancers showed through and was passed on to the audience. The costumes were elaborate traditional dresses for the women, and high leather boots and tunics for the men.

The ballet was filled with many different pieces through which the audience was able to receive new insight into Georgian dance. At times, the dancers wore the customary puffy hats and puffy knee covers. The only drawback to the women's costuming was the difficultly in seeing their footwork, which limits the appreciation one could attain. The elaborate swordplay while dancing, high jumps, and interwoven choreography were brilliantly preformed, and the additional Georgian band of musicians allowed the ballet to take on a very personal tone.

As always The New York City Ballet sponsors only the best of dancers. The show was a magnificent selection of ethnic dances, costumes, and music. The only drawback to the show was the theater's inability to give me a good seat. Since this was the only showing that the Georgian ballet would perform the theater was packed, and although there were seats below the fourth ring, the didn't find it necessary to give me such a privilege. So, some helpful advice to future audiences, bring binoculars.
